some questions (bugs ?) on Sox (Windows)

Francois Auger
Dear Sox users,
I am very happy to use Sox for Signal Processing laboratory exercises
with my students. However, I have some minor problems.

How to zoom with the latest verions of Sox and gnuplot ?
I am using sox-14.3.1 and gnuplot version 4.4.0 under windows (same problems
with 2000, XP and 7). If I use
sox --plot gnuplot sonrigolo3.mp3 -n bandpass 4800 0.5q   > courbe4800_m2.plt
and then run gnuplot with the file courbe4800_m2.plt,
I don't succeed to zoom inside the figure. Can anybody terll me how
to do that ?

Why isn't it possible to do file redirection with the stat and stats actions ?
If I run
soxi s01.mp3 > resultats1.txt
the results usually printed on the screen by soxi are stored in the
file resultats1.txt
But if I try
sox s01.mp3 -n stat > resultats2.txt
sox s01.mp3 -n stats > resultats3.txt
the files resultats2.txt and resultats3.txt are empty. This seems
strange for me,
since sox and soxi are the same ! Isn't it a bug ?

Thank you in advance for your reply,
best regards,

You might want to ask on a gnuplot list to find out how to zoom in with gnuplot.

The command equivalent to "soxi (file)" is "sox --info (file)". The normal output from sox goes via stderr, not stdout. To redirect stderr to a file, you must use "sox (parameters) 2> (file)". The syntax "2> (file)" means "redirect output from handle 2 to (file)." Handle 2 is stderr. When no number is given for the handle, the default is 1. Handle 1 is stdout.

Dear all,
Thank you Doug for your reply. However,
1) I have absolutely no problems to zoom with other applications
using gnuplot.
I suppose that there is a problem with the gnuplot instructions
generated by sox.
Does anyone succeed to zoom in a gnuplot figure generated by sox ?
2) I still find strange to use "soxi > file.txt" and "sox 2>
file.txt". Why does soxi
not also print in the stderr handle ?
Thank you in advance for your reply,
best regards,

Dear all,
Thank you Doug for your reply. However,

I suppose that there is a problem with the gnuplot instructions

Does anyone succeed to zoom in a gnuplot figure generated by sox ?

Don't run under windows however I find that after resizing the gnuplot window, I have to press the "Apply autoscale" button.

2) I still find strange to use "soxi > file.txt" and "sox 2>
file.txt". Why does soxi
not also print in the stderr handle ?

soxi is a 'standard' text-output app and so uses stdout.
sox uses stdout for audio pipelining so text output goes to stderr.

HTH,
Rob
